The Mother’s Day Surprise Story

For the upcoming Mother's Day in May 2020 we decided to surprise Mama Amani, a mother of five children. Two of her children are sponsored by Million Footprints to visit the Kindergarten. The family’s clay hut was damaged by the heavy the rains Kenya had experienced over the previous weeks.

In Kenya, many live a very simple and hard life - and yet they are proud and humble people. In coordination with our MFP Ambassador Silvia Pirelli we decided to build the family a new home. A home they could feel safe in.

Over a stretch of six weeks, Silvia our MFP Ambassador put in countless hours to manage and organize this task.  Silvia and the family selected a new spot, cleared the area, prepared the ground, got the posts in place, bound the structure that would be filled with stones and clay for the walls, built the roof structure, and covered it with a new roof.

Then coral stones were hammered into the ground as a foundation for the cement floor inside the house.

Next came the door and the window.

When we learned the family had only one bed for the two youngest children, the rest were sleeping on the ground, we decided to get them all the furniture they need to feel safe and at home.

In May 2021, one year later, Silvia delivered kitchen tools. This allows the mother to bake Mandazi (the Kenyan version of donuts) and she already sold her first batch. She was smiling all day. It fills our hearts that she now - no matter how simple - has a way to earn some money for her family.
